Balika Badhu Turns 50: Rediscover the Film Behind ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain’

You may have hummed Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, recognised its instantly familiar melody or heard it playing somewhere recently. But the song is only one reason to discover Balika Badhu. As the film completes 50 years, Ultra Play OTT is inviting audiences to go beyond a familiar melody and discover the film, its characters, its gentle storytelling and the cinematic world that made it a memorable part of Hindi cinema. Produced by legendary filmmaker Shakti Samanta, Balika Badhu released in 1976 and starred Sachin Pilgaonkar and Rajni Sharma in the lead. Based on Bimal Kar’s Bengali novel, the film follows a young couple as they gradually grow from innocence towards a deeper understanding of companionship and marriage, offering a glimpse into the social and cultural world of its time.

The film’s enduring appeal is closely connected to its music. Composed by RD Burman with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, the soundtrack featured memorable voices including Amit Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi. Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, sung by Amit Kumar, remains one of the most recognisable songs associated with the film. But for a new generation discovering the melody today, the 50th anniversary presents an opportunity to go one step further, from knowing the song to discovering the film it came from. “At Ultra, we believe great cinema deserves to be discovered by every generation. Balika Badhu is a wonderful example of a timeless film whose music, emotions and storytelling continue to invite audiences back. Its 50th anniversary is an opportunity to rediscover not just the film, but the rich catalogue of classics waiting to be explored,” said Sushilkumar Agrawal, Founder & CEO, Ultra Media & Entertainment Group.

As part of its focus on making timeless Hindi cinema discoverable for new audiences, Ultra Play OTT brings Balika Badhu to viewers alongside a vast collection of classic and contemporary entertainment. The film is also part of the Shakti Samanta collection, giving audiences an opportunity to use one classic as a starting point to explore the work of one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated filmmakers. This 50th anniversary, Ultra Play invites audiences to not just hum the song, but discover the film, discover the era and discover the classic, because some of the best stories aren’t new; they are simply waiting to be discovered again
